Mon 8 Aug 6pm-8.30pm at Peckham cinema – Peckham film

Local Peckham film maker Chris Haydon has sent information of a showing of his latest film in our Peckham cinema in Rye Lane on Monday 8th August. This will be an informative film about our life in Peckham with some of our neighbours. Well worth going to support our local cinema and local film makers, while learning about our own community. See details below. A short video preview is on

screening at Peckhamplex
8 August 6-8.30pm

As part of the Elephant & The Nun Festival, Peckhamplex is showing the recent DVD I produced with and for Peckham’s Irish Traveller communities. It was well received at its Tate Modern launch.

Of the two support organisations, STAG and STESS, STAG (action group) has its staff cut to two and although it has lost its local funding it can carry on; STESS (educational support service) is
axed and the man of 30 years service, Dave Cannon (of Consort Rd), is being made redundant. He has brokered relations between families and schools, and between schools and families. Patiently over a long period, change in the relations has arrived. The loss now of these organisations gives rise to some concern, for the development of the three official Traveller sites in Peckham was not warmly greeted by all – we learn that within a week of setting up at one site, fire bombs came over the wall.

This screening is a chance to learn about our neighbours, some of whom have been here for well over twenty years as settled members of the Southwark community. I will run the event to allow for Q+A from time to time, but with the cinema management’s generosity it should be possible to screen the majority of the DVD’s content and still encourage discussion.
Here is the information about the film:

In the 1980’s Southwark set out to establish official sites for Travellers and the Irish Traveller community. There are now three sites in Peckham and one in Bermondsey.

Chris Haydon from Community TV Trust spent a year filming with the co operation of  STAG [Southwark Travellers Action Group] and STESS [Southwark Travellers Education Support Service] The resulting films provide an insight into their family life and an opportunity for the Travellers to have their own stories told honestly and passionately.

The positive stories abound: young Martin is singing proof that Travellers Got Talent; Gerry has already won a Junior ABA boxing title; Traveller men, usually shy and elusive with cameras around, emerge as enterprising, articulate, successful, conscientious, dutiful, humorous; the day at the Epsom races saw young Traveller women immersed in the Traveller Fair, much more interested in beautifying their homes than backing horses; a local wedding makes an engaging fly-on-the-wall documentary

PeckhamPlex presents this film as part of Southwark’s new
Elephant and the Nun Festival 5 -14 August.
