independent films at Peckham’s Rye Lane cinema

Peckham’s independent cinema in Rye Lane is widening its local cinema offering – see message below. The cinema is a key part of the cultural life of Peckham in the central part of Rye Lane. Between Thursdays and Sundays this summer you can take a trip to Frank’s Cafe and the outdoor sculpture exhibition, Bold Tendencies, at the top of the multi storey cafe park on your way to or from the cinema on its front doorstep!

Message from Peckham’s independent cinema

We at Peckhamplex are broadening our programming remit and each week are going to screen at least one independent, art-house or foreign language film for your pleasure.

For our first one we have chosen the award-winning Iranian film A SEPARATION: 5th – 11th August, 6pm and 8.30pm showings.
___________________________________________________________
A suspenseful and intelligent drama about life at the heart of contemporary Iranian society, the separation of the title refers to Nadar and Simin, a middle class couple living in Tehran with their young daughter.  Simin’s desire to move the family away from Iran in the hope of a better future causes a domestic upheavals and fissures in their marriage. Fast paced, intriguing and with more turns than a classic Hitchcock, this is a film that people will be talking about long after it has ended.

The film was initially banned from being made after director Asghar Farhadi (About Elly) expressed support for fellow controversial Iranian filmmakers like Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Jafar Panahi. The ban was only after it was argued that he had been misunderstood and was forced to apologise for the comments.

We look forward to seeing you at Peckhamplex and hope you will enjoy our choice of special films to be screened each week. Visit http://www.peckhamplex.com/films-out-now/ for the screening programme for the week starting August 5th. See also attached for print. We would, of course, welcome your feedback on our new approach to programming.
