Old Waiting Room news + 14th March meeting

To all who have registered an interest in the future of the Old Waiting Room.  This is to ensure you know about the next meeting relating to the Old Waiting Room on Wed 14th March 7pm, exhibition 4pm. This will be part of a community meeting about a number of important developments in the town centre. Please see the details at end of this email. You can see here some of the news over the last six months or so:

The permissions for the works to restore the external staircase have now been granted. The works to unbrick the windows in the forecourt should start in the next couple of months. The hope is still to try to get the staircase work completed, and the rain leaks in the roof and resulting mild damage to the floor repaired, in time to get the room usable temporarily by the public during this coming summer. It is going to be tough and we may not achieve it. If we did, the idea would be to devise a series of exhibitions and other public uses for the room during some of the Cultural Olympiad period.

This could then be part of a programme of cultural activities being presented anyway by the other creative enterprises nearby in central Rye Lane – eg Bold Tendencies & Frank’s Cafe in the multi storey car park, the cinema, the CLF Art Cafe and other enterprises in the Bussey building, the Hannah Barry Gallery and Son Gallery in the Copeland quarter site, the Sunday Painter & the Sassoon Gallery in Blenheim Grove, and maybe more.

If you have ideas which could contribute to a Rye Lane Cultural Olympiad, and which the Old Waiting Room could be part of, do let us know.

Some big news is that the restoration of the station square is now definitely going to happen, and much earlier than we expected. This is because some £3-5m is being made available by the London Mayor through the GLA, to add to a similar amount from Southwark Council. Some funds from that will probably also be available to add to the promised funding from the Railway Heritage Trust to enable the restoration of the Old Waiting Room to be completed. But a lot more of this will be clearer by the time of the meeting. We hope you can come to hear all the latest news, help us celebrate the huge success in getting this far and take part in developing the momentum, enthusiasm, energy and ideas for the next stage.

We apologise for any multiple postings as we have not had time to sort through different lists for Old Waiting Room supporters, and don’t want to miss anyone out.

Finally, if you would be able to volunteer to help on the 14th March in the Bussey building preparing or assisting at the exhibition or welcoming people to the meeting, please contact me. We always need several pairs of hands. email –
