Peckham Vision comments on London Plan April 2014

From Peckham Vision Facebook: Can the community influence major redevelopment and regeneration schemes in their own neighbourhoods? (see previous post and article.) That article tells some of the story of those difficulties in our Peckham experience with the Station Gateway project. The new co-design process this summer for the Gateway project will give us some experience of how the existing processes might be improved.

The ‘London Plan’ http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/planning/london-plan contains the planning policies which set the tone and process for redevelopment and regeneration schemes all across London. This is a major factor in determining whether and how a community can influence developments in its own neighbourhood. Consultation on some changes to the London Plan has just finished and Peckham Vision submitted comments.

The submission is here:http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/images/3/3c/PECKHAM_VISION_response_to_FALP_Final.pdf. This may be useful reading in preparation for the forthcoming Gateway co-design process. The submission shows, through the story of the Station Gateway site, how a medium-size town centre can regenerate itself. This is an organic development growing from the re-use of existing buildings, rather than the demolition and rebuild assumptions as the key approach in the London Plan and in the worlds of the large property companies and developers.
